M. Kanter presented Im/polite Matters: Creative Texts and Projects with a power point presentation of Im/politeness: One Hundred Im/polite Days by Marjorie Kanter at the 4th International Conference on Intercultural Pragmatics and Communication (15-17 November 2010). This is an artist’s project meant for reflection and dialogue on communication and incommunication in general and politeness and impoliteness in particular; both within a culture and crossing cultures. The texts were generated and then posted one per day between December 2, 2009 and March 11, 2010 on Tweeter and Facebook (and have become a book ISBN 978-84-614-2674-4) as part of Ms. Kanter’s participation in the London Word Festival. Following the 144 character maximum per entry allowed on Twitter, the 100+2 entries investigate, experiment, create, reflect, document and invite dialogue/participation. These tweets include creative texts, questions, quotes, statements, cartoons, references, film/video, etc. Readers are invited/incited to join in dialogue provoked/sparked by these short texts.

The Monkey and the Fish

An oriental fable

...Once upon a time, there was a great flood, and involved in this flood were two creatures--a monkey and a fish. The monkey, being agile and experienced, was lucky enough to scramble up a tree and escape the raging waters. As he looked down from his safe perch he saw the poor fish struggling against the swift current. With the very best of intentions, he reached down and lifted the fish from the water.

An Ancient Story

A man who led basically a good life died and was assigned to Hell for a short time. He discovered that the main torture in Hell was that everyone was forced to eat with spoons that were longer than their arms. The condemned spent eternity in the midst of excellent food they couldn't eat. When he was finally transferred up to Heaven, he found that the blessed were given the same spoons. In heaven, howver, no one went hungry because they fed each other.

(Special guest coming for this event from near Seigen,Germany) Born on 26 December 1942, in Bavaria, Germany, Heinrich Waegner studied English and German Language and Literature in Erlangen (Germany), Exeter (UK) and Charlottesville (University of Virginia, USA). He has taught German at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and at the University of Virginia. At high schools in Germany he not only taught English and German, but also Creative Writing and Theater. Europe-wide renowned, Waegner was invited to perform with his drama troupe at many festivals, generally winning prizes when they were offered. Along with teaching numerous workshops abroad and teachers’ training seminars at home, he has published many plays of his own or modern adaptations and theatrical articles concerning physically-oriented theater work with youths. With his emphasis on bodywork as being at least as important in theatre as language, he stimulates creative presentations of human behaviour beyond verbal possibilities. That is why he has titled his teachers’ manual From the Inside to the Outside – Acting via the Body. Starting with a series of physical activities that enhance sensitivity for stage presence and awareness of “the empty space,” partner exercises – along with music – move toward a kind of dance theatre long before texts are needed, making visible what happens inside. Extensions like music, sparse but intelligently “estranged” props which can add anachronistic humor, and of course stylized, minimal costumes – all in the spirit of “poor theater” – aid the expressiveness of the human images (scenes) exactly through their simplicity. Not until then should language fill in the messages that need verbal exactness. Since myths lend themselves particularly well to archetypal and intercultural interpretation, Waegner’s main interest lies in myths, which form the basis of most of his performed and published plays. Their perceptions and narrative intensity are still valid today when translated into the present with imagination and cheekiness by young performers. Aside from creating, directing and publishing plays for 30 years and writing on drama, Waegner has published several volumes of modern poetry and prose and has created “concerted art-happenings,” i.e. poetry readings accompanying abstract paintings, supplemented by musicians and dancers. The Tour
Writer Marjorie Kanter will take you on a illustrated walk through the streets around Plaza Santa Ana in downtown Madrid, the neighborhood where she lives and works. Along the way, we will stop for Marjorie to read some of her literary pieces at the specific points where they first occurred. These short literary pieces are about her daily life experiences and observations. A great gift for visiting family and friends -- gives them a writers personal view of life in the city.

Historias para la Espera: Un proyecto de La Noche en Blanco para la fila de El Matadero.

Para participar, pincha en COMMENTS y escribé tu historia real o inventada de la espera.

El proyecto tiene como fin compartir unos textos literarios con los espectadores y así involucarles en la experiencia, en la escritura, en el esperar, escuchar, reflejar, dialogar y crear. Cambiamos el hecho de esperar en una cola a un evento recreativo, relacional y creativo. La prouesta tiene elementos para el espectador como espectador pero tiene también como fin llevarle a su propia expresión, su propia creación y finalmente el regreso a ser espectador, pero esta segunda vez en colectivo. Uno de los objetivos es ver las muúltiples posibilidades que se pueden generar sobre el mismo tema, desde el mismos punto de partida. Para participar, pincha en comments y escribé tu cuento de la espera.

This project by Marjorie Kanter is a combination of reading-intervention-participation. The author will float around the waiting crowd reading some of her pieces that are related to waiting in line and then she will incite the spectator to become participant and tell their in line stories. The event will be recorded and documented including a posting of participant stories on this blog. September 13, 2008 beginning at 7:30 pm. Title: Vilamovicés (Wymysöriś) – la más pequeña lengua germánica.

Summary: Está ponencia intenta acercar al público universitario español una lengua germánica prácticamente desconocida tanto por los estudiantes como por los docentes. Vilomovicés es una lengua hablada por 80 personas en el sur de Polonia. Sus orígenes, como en el caso del yiddish (otra lengua germánica hablada antes en el territorio polaco) remontan probablemente hasta el medio-alto alemán. La posición del vilamovicés dentro de la familia germánica es especial por varias razones: algunos rasgos morfológicos (infinitivos tanto en n como en a), el fenómeno de la aglutinación a la cadena verbal de los pronombres y algunos adverbios, polonización del consonantismo, o por su desarrollo tan diferente de lo que ocurrió en el yiddish. En consecuencia, el vilamovicés es una lengua muy interesante para la lingüística germánica, y ante todo para mejor entendimiento del fenómeno language contact.

Durante esta presentación se presentará 1) la historia del vilamovicés, 2) sus rasgos gramaticales y 3) su carácter especial en comparación con el yiddish y otras lenguas germánicas. La ponencia se basa en escasos textos literarios preservados en el vilamovicés y en la investigación llevada a cabo desde el año 2007 por Alexander Andrason y otros miembros del ELPR – Wymysöriś.

Bio-note: Alexander Andrason: lingüista investigando en la tipólogía, gramática comparada y diacrónica, fenómeno de lenguas en contacto, lenguas indoeuropeas y semíticas, lenguas en extinción. M.A. en la gramática islandesa; M.A. en la filología románica; B.A. en la lingüística general; B.A. en la filología islandesa; B.A. en la filología románica; títulos universitarios (nivel superior) en lengua árabe y sueca. Desde 2006 ha trabajado como profesor en varias universidades en Islandia, España, Marruecos, Polonia y Montenegro. Director del Proyecto de Rescate de Lenguas en Extinción (ELRP – Wymysöriś).

Title: A Writer's Point of View: Readings for an Interactive Session

Summary: Marjorie Kanter (www.elasunto.com/mkd.htm) will read texts from her book, projects, and writings in process. These texts are culled from her journals of the past twenty some years during which time she has lived and traveled in Madrid, Southern Spain, the Dominican Republic, Morocco and the United States. Her work captures events and personal experiences of real life in different cultural and geographical environments. The readings will serve as the platform for pursuing the issues they spark and highlight; matters such as mis/communication, code switching, translation, creativity, points of view, identity, the pragmatic issues of intent, act and function, etc.

Bio-note:

Marjorie Kanter (author of "I displace the air as I walk"*, other writings and word art installations) was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA , has known Spain since 1965, and lived here for the past 24 years. "Writing found me. A need -- to communicate with self, take distance, get inside my feelings and experiences -- all provoked me to keep journals that slowly turned into finished poem-like pieces largely in narrative form. My first career was as a Bilingual Speech and Language Therapist, then Teacher Trainer around issues of Bilingual Education, Special Education, Language Development, Intercultural Matters, and now Writer-Author and Trainer. I strive to mesh (all) my different selves, experiences and interests: communication, linguistics, the workings of the mind (cognition and emotion), social workings (relationships), and culture(s).

*"I displace the air as I walk" is a collection of short literary pieces: narrative stories in condensed form and poem-like pieces that reflect larger universal themes of understanding and misunderstanding, communication and miscommunication.

Title: Mi Mundo Celta/My Celtic World
The Story Girl', is a Scottish storyteller and painter resident in Spain. Her creativity is inspired by Nature and to human beings. Because of her concern and interest for the environmental and social problems that our planet is offer sows story seeds, believing that through ancestral wisdom, we can connect again to Nature and start to look after all the life inside her. Here we accompany Jennifer on a visit to her native land, to her Celtic World.

Following the traditional rune of Celtic hospitality 'When a visitor arrives there is food in the eating place, drink in the drinking place and stories and music in the listening place', Jennifer takes us to the hospitality of her grandmother's house in the Scottish Highlands. And there, around the fireplace, we start the magical visit to her Celtic World with Shortbread, ribena, legends, riddles and secrets of this green, mysterious land. We'll visit an enchanted forest full of ancient, wise trees and a Scottish castle where a giant ghost lives. We'll also visit an Irish king who has donkey's ears and listen to a lullaby from her infancy.

The respect that the Celts had for Nature is the essence of all these stories: we have to look after our home.

We'll finish with Scottish dancing in this unforgettable journey.

Ellos (dijeron): "¡Hombre, no! No hemos pedido (una) Fanta.
Pedimos cuatro cafés, no tres.
¡Falta uno!
Nos falta un café.
¡Falta uno!"
Con decisión, seguridad y de manera definitiva el camarero respondió:
“Ustedes dijeron: ¡Fanta uno! ¡(Y) AQUÍ ESTÁ!”
(Entonces se la jugaron a los chinos, a ver a quién le tocaba la Fanta.)

La deconstrucción de los acontecimientos cotidianos y su reconstrucción posterior a través del lenguaje es el modus operandi con el que afronta sus trabajos Marjorie Kanter. Podemos hablar del observador casual (pero sintonizado para percibir la frecuencia de las vibraciones cotidianas), que, ante los acontecimientos que aparentemente pasan desapercibidos para la mayoría, encuentra la materia (raw material) con la que tejer una visión diferenciada (diferida, quizás) de lo que es real y constituir de esa manera una pieza de ficción que de nuevo se incorpora a la esfera de lo real. Los trabajos de Marjorie Kanter siempre se han mantenido en el ámbito literario. Sus referencias más próximas pueden ser los trabajos de Jenny Holzer, Sophie Calle o los etcéteras de Juan Hidalgo. Sin embargo, existe una pulsión emancipadora de los textos mismos de la esfera literaria en que la autora los tiene recluidos. Esa pulsión latente (aparte de su indudable calidad) es la característica más destacable de estos textos, que manifiestan una voluntad emancipadora del terreno literario para incorporarse de nuevo a la esfera de lo real en forma de objetos. Los textos que reflejan las imágenes del mundo sintonizadas por la autora desean desembocar en la realidad como un torrente que vuelve al mar. Otro de los aspectos importantes del trabajo de Marjorie es el uso de una lengua mestiza, una interlingua o nuyòrika surgida de la cohabitación de razas en las grandes ciudades. Esta característica dota a los trabajos de la autora de un aspecto sociológico muy interesante: la conformación de nuevos dialectos surgidos de la intersección cultural. La intervención de Marjorie es su primera incursión en el safari de las imágenes. La autora ha decidido dejar que sus textos se relacionen con los objetos. Y el resultado de ello ha sido Hidden Thoughts. Una intervención breve, de un carácter conceptual marcado, que reflexiona y remite de manera continua a sí misma. Una máquina circular de carácter lingüístico que adopta una forma de elipse tridimensional. Así pues, sólo falta decir lo que la autora nos invita a ver, una puesta en escena de sus piezas literarias creadas ad hoc para este ciclo de intervenciones en forma de conversación entre la autora y la audiencia: Conversation I wanted to say more than 'hello' so I said '¡Qué calor!' © 2002 M. I displace the air as I walk is a collection of short literary pieces: narrative stories in condensed form and poem-like-pieces that reflect larger universal themes of understanding and misunderstanding, communication and miscommunication.

Ms. Kanter's writings are culled from her journals of the past eighteen years during which time she has lived and travelled in Madrid, Southern Spain, the Dominican Republic, Morocco and the United States. Ms. Kanter brings to her creative writing her extensive experience as a Bilingual Speech and Language Pathologist, Intercultural Consultant and Trainer, Faculty Member and Program Director in the area of Bilingual Special Education in Higher Education and her experiences and introspections while living in different cultures. She holds degrees from Ohio University and the University of Cincinnati, USA. Born in Cincinnati, she currently divides her time between Madrid and Tarifa, Spain where she is working on new writings, and offering readings and training sessions."
